How to Choose the Right Crate for Your Product

Selecting the right crate for your product isn't always straightforward. The wrong type of packaging can result in damage, delays, or even customer dissatisfaction. At ABC Crating, we help you navigate the different types of crates available — from standard wooden crates to corrugated crates and heavy-duty specialty builds.

The first step is evaluating the product's weight, dimensions, and fragility. For heavy machinery or equipment, a reinforced wooden crate with skids and shock absorption is ideal. For lighter or less fragile items, corrugated panel crates may suffice — offering both durability and cost-efficiency. Items like electronics or medical instruments may need internal bracing and foam cushioning to prevent damage during transport.

Environmental factors also play a big role in crate selection. Will your crate be exposed to moisture, extreme temperatures, or stacking pressure? If so, choosing a moisture-resistant or heat-treated crate is crucial. For international shipping, compliance with ISPM-15 regulations is non-negotiable — especially when exporting to countries with strict import standards.

Finally, think about how your product will be handled. Will it be lifted by forklifts? Stacked in warehouses? Placed in containers? Your crate design should include forklift-friendly skids, reinforced corners, and tie-down points if needed. With a well-chosen crate, you’re not just protecting your product — you’re streamlining your entire supply chain.
